The area of Makarora was once covered with thick forests, which lead to it being a key saw milling area supplying timber to the Otago Goldfields. Tourism plays a bigger part in the area now, with great options of jet-boating, scenic flights and walks. With Stray Journeys, we stay at the Makarora Tourist Centre. We recommend the cheap group meal for only $12 around the bonfire or warm up your vocal chords for some karaoke action in the bar. This is a great place to stay nestled in between huge mountain ranges in Mount Aspiring National Park.
