Itinerary
Starts: Siem Reap
Finishes: Phnom Penh
Meet-up Time: Check into our Siem Reap accommodation anytime after 2pm on the Arrival Day then meet your Tour Leader and Group at 6pm (local time).
Please note: Given the spontaneous nature of our trips, what we do each day might occasionally vary.
Arrive Siem Reap
It's time to discover Cambodia! Your adventure starts in the exciting city of Siem Reap. If you arrive early, feel free to spend time exploring the old town where you can buy fresh fruit or clothes and gifts.
At 6pm you'll meet your Tour Leader and new travel mates at our hotel for a Welcome Night introduction. We'll cover how Stray works and answer any questions you have about travelling in Cambodia. Afterwards, you'll go for a city orientation tour and dinner with your group and guide.
Siem Reap
After breakfast at the hotel this morning, we'll head to Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the iconic temple Angkor Wat, for a full day of temple touring. Often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, Angkor Wat literally translates to ‘City of Temples' and is the largest religious monument in the world. After your full day of exploring, you'll arrive back at your hotel at around 5pm and you have an evening free to explore the nightlife on Pub Street.
Siem Reap
You have some more time to explore the temples of Angkor Wat this morning, and before a free afternoon and evening to uncover Siem Reap's hidden treasures for yourself.
We highly recommend checking out a show at the Phare Circus this evening, which tells uniquely Cambodian stories in an entertaining and light-hearted way. All profits go to social projects for disadvantaged children so you can be sure your evening of enjoyment is also going to an amazing cause.
Siem Reap to Phnom Penh
After breakfast at your hotel this morning you'll board a private, air-conditioned vehicle and embark on your 6-hour journey to Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital. We'll stop frequently along the way and on arrival in Phnom Penh you'll have a guided tour in the evening to get you acquainted with this energising capital city.
Phnom Penh
Today, Cambodian history is brought to life with a tour of two of the country's most infamous locations: the Khmer Rouge's Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng S21 Prison. This sobering experience will likely feelsurreal and we'll learn more about the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide.
Afterwards, we'll head back to Phnom Penh and have lunch together at a local restaurant called Friends. Friends the Restaurant is an incredible organisation which helps former street children and marginalised young people in Phnom Penh to build a future. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend exploring the area, stroll over to the Royal Palace or walk down to the waterfront and relax.
Phnom Penh to Koh Rong
Today we'll travel by private vehicle to the coastal city of Sihanoukville. We'll go straight to the wharf and board a 45-minute ferry to Koh Rong. Known for its unbelievable natural beauty, sandy shores and crystal waters, Koh Rong is paradise! We'll check in to our resort accommodation and go for a look around the island before settling in for the evening.
Koh Rong
Today is your first full free day to explore Koh Rong island and enjoy the local activities. Take an island tour, go jet skiing, go for a stroll along the beach and watch incredible sun sets and sun rises. Once night has descended, paddle into the water to wonder at the bioluminescent plankton, a magical natural phenomenon that can only be viewed in places with low light pollution.
Koh Rong
Koh Rong is one of our tour highlights, so we spend another wonderful day here. Lay in the sunshine, hike across the island, or spend a day enjoying refreshing beverages and swimming or snorkelling in the ocean - you're in paradise after all.
Koh Rong to Phnom Penh
This is your final morning on Koh Rong, enjoy a leisurely sleep in and go for a swim before boarding your private boat back to the mainland. We'll board our private tour vehicle on arrival and head back to Phnom Penh where we'll check in to our accommodation and before our final group dinner.
Phnom Penh Departure Day
Have breakfast this morning before departing for your next destination. If you're not ready to go home just yet, why not ask your tour guide about our group tours in Vietnam.

Want To Know More About Cambodia?
Why Visit Cambodia?
Cambodia is a country rich in culture and variety, which stuns visitors with its ancient wonders. Stray travellers love exploring the majestic Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument, and discovering hidden temples shrouded in mystery. It's a place where the modern world can feel so far away, where the opulent palaces of Phnom Penh contrast with the somber reminders of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and where authentic experiences wait for travellers who look for them.
From wild national parks to fresh Cambodian cuisine and vibrant markets, there's really something for everyone.
What Should I Wear To Angkor Wat and Cambodia Temples?
Cambodian temples are revered spaces, so please pay respect through your attire and behaviour. Your tour guide can advise on appropriate clothing, but generally, long skirts or pants are recommended for women (don't worry, most temples offer wraps if needed).
Remember to remove your shoes before entering as a sign of respect. Be mindful of your body language too - avoid touching heads, which are considered sacred in Cambodian culture. Feet are seen as the lowest part of the body, so refrain from pointing or gesturing with them. While minor slips may be overlooked in tourist areas, understanding these simple tips goes a long way in showing respect and making sure you enjoy a smooth visit to Cambodia's beautiful temples.
When is The Best Time to Visit Cambodia?
Cambodia has a wet season and a dry season. We take the guesswork out of your trip by scheduling our Cambodia tours in the Dry Season, from November to May. Dry Season gives us clear sunny days and pleasant temperatures perfect for exploring temples and enjoying the outdoor activities of our small group tours.
What is traditional food in Cambodia?
Cambodian cuisine is a bold tapestry of flavours, influenced by its neighbours and unique ingredients.
Popular Cambodian dishes include:
-
Fish Amok: This delicate steamed fish in a creamy coconut, lemongrass and ginger curry sauce is wrapped in banana leaves. If you're not a fan of fish, look for amok with chicken, tofu or veggies.
-
Samlor: A hearty soup with various broths, vegetables, and meat (fish, pork, chicken). SamlorKorkor, with lemongrass and turmeric, is a national favourite.
-
Tropical fruit: The fresh fruit in Cambodia is out of this world! Jackfruit, pineapples, watermelon, mangoes, bananas and dragon fruit grow here, and you can often find a street vendor mixing up fresh juices or smoothies for a refreshing treat.
-
Nom Banh Chok: Breakfast in Cambodia is a far cry from soggy cornflakes or toast. Nom Banh Chok is a popular breakfast dish made from fragrant fish-based curry soup topped with fresh herbs, vegetables, and thin rice noodles.
-
Khmer Curry: You'll find red, green, and yellow curries with a variety of ingredients. Cambodian cooking is just as tasty as Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese food, but usually isn't as spicy, so you'll find a range of spice levels to choose from.
-
Cambodian Desserts: Dig into sticky rice with juicy mango and coconut milk, or treat yourself to sweet French influenced pastries.
We recommend getting out of your comfort zone and trying new foods while travelling in Cambodia, there'sa whole world of flavours to explore!
Is it Safe to Travel to Cambodia?
Cambodia is generally considered safe for tourists, and Cambodians are known for their warm personalities and willingness to help visitors (even with a language barrier). They appreciate tourism and the economic benefits it brings to their beautiful country.
The crime rate is low, but petty theft and scams can happen in tourist areas, so keep an eye on your belongings. In some regional areas, there might be advisories to stick to well-maintained paths for safety reasons, and Wet Season can bring severe weather.
Stray's tour guides are locals - they know the country, the culture, and the people, and are there to show you the ropes and keep you safe on your Cambodian adventure!
How many days in Cambodia is enough?
One week in Cambodia is enough for a whirlwind tour, but 10 days gives you time to really experience the atmosphere, culture and sights, without being constantly on the move. You want at least a few days to explore the main cities and Angkor Wat, and a few to relax on the gorgeous beaches in the south.
How Long Should I Spend at Angkor Wat?
Depending on how much you want to see, allow at least one day of your Cambodia itinerary to explore the ancient wonders of Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is part of the largest religious structure in the world, a vast complex containing other significant temples like Bayon and Ta Prohm. To give you an idea of the scale, it takes 45 minutes to walk from the entrance of Angkor Wat to the Bayon Temple.
Our Cambodian group tours allow one and half days in Angkor Wat, so you can explore the outer buildings, appreciate the hidden details, and climb the central towers for breathtaking panoramic views. You can also hire bicycles, jeeps and TuK-Tuks to help you see more of the site. We recommend getting up early one day (we know you're on holiday, but we promise it's worth it) to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, it's truly spectacular.
