Beach Hopper 18-19

Available for travel from 5 October 2018 - 29 April 2019

The Beach Hopper pass is an action packed three days taking in caves, lakes, waterfalls, and two of New Zealand's most beautiful beaches, on opposite sides of the coastline - showcasing New Zealand's spectacular nature. If surfing, hiking, stand up paddle boarding, intrepid caving or just long walks on the beach is your thing, you'll want to hop on the Beach Hopper.

The Beach Hopper can be booked on its own, or added to selected National or North Island passes.

  • Go deep underground and explore a vast cave network lit by glowworms at Waitomo Caves.
  • See an impressive 55m waterfall cascading through native bush, falls so beautiful they're called Bridal Veil Falls.
  • Watch a West Coast sunset from Inspiration Point
  • Take a surf lesson on New Zealand's most famous, black sand surf beach in Raglan
  • Spend time swimming and sunbathing
  • Hike up to the top of Mount Maunganui for epic views over the Bay of Plenty.

"The Beach Hopper pass hits all the places we locals love to holiday! These are the spots I would recommend to any international visitor with a short amount of time to explore, who wants to see some vastly different landscapes. You've got massive caves, sparkling with glow worms, geothermal landscapes, lakes and then two distinctly different coastlines - one with white sand, and one with black!"

Beach Hopper 18-19

Given the spontaneous nature of our trips and lack of control over New Zealand's weather(!), what we do each day might occasionally vary from the itinerary below.

Rotorua (via Waitomo) to Raglan (*Beach Hopper)

Departing early from Rotorua, our first stop of the day is Waitomo, where the main attraction is underground! Don’t miss out on the opportunity for a seriously cool caving adventure that will have you wading, climbing, abseiling and tubing through Waitomo’s magnificent cave network. Next, we will set off on a little adventure to Bridal Veil Falls, where a short walk through beautiful native bush leads to the impressive 55m cascading waterfall, before arriving at our overnight accommodation in Raglan. Spend your evening watching the surfers from the beach, enjoying a bush walk or watching the sunset from the aptly named Inspiration Point. Chill out or go hard in this cool surf town – it’s totally up to you!

Waitomo caving or glow worm tour, sunset cruise (summer only)

Bridal Veil falls, bush walk around Mt Karioi, beach walk, glow-worm spotting

There’s no better place to learn to surf than Raglan’s legendary left-hand surf break, so we recommend making the most of your opportunity to take a class this morning! If surfing isn’t for you, then you can cheer your mates on from the beach or go for a walk around the local area. Around midday, we’ll express to Mount Maunganui, located in the magnificent Bay of Plenty region, where you will have the afternoon free to relax, explore the local area, hire a stand-up-paddle board or even test out your new surf skills! Make sure to soak up the laid-back, surfer vibes downtown this evening or just kick back on the beach under the stars.

Get ready for an action-packed day! Seize the morning with a sunrise hike up Mount Maunganui where you’ll be able to see the entire Western Bay of Plenty and admire the white sand coastline.  We’ll hop back on the bus afterwards, stopping to enjoy some epic sights along the way – including a stunning waterfall and blue lake. You’ll be able to snap some Insta-worthy photos from the viewpoints, get up close and personal with nature and even take a dip in the clear waters during the warmer months before arriving back in Rotorua

The buses are driven by qualified, knowledgeable Driver Guides who will lead you on a true adventure around our carefully thought out route, offering the mix of iconic 'hot spots' and super special 'off the beaten track' destinations we refer to as STRADEMARK places.

Best of all you have total freedom to hop on and off the bus at destinations along the way so you can spend more time in the places you love.

How do you hop on and off the bus?

Hop off‘Hop off’ the bus anywhere along the route, even places in between the designated stops. Either plan to hop off in advance or do it spur of the moment – it’s up to you!

To hop back on, simply book your next travel date and pickup location through Stray Mate, your online Trip Manager (you'll receive log in info after you've booked).

The buses run on a regular timetable with multiple departures a week so you can plan ahead too.

Your pass is valid for up to 12 months from your first day of travel, meaning you can hop on and off as often as you like for up to a year!

Short on time?

You are not required to hop off the bus – feel free to use your pass like a tour and complete the itinerary in its ‘minimum days’. Either way you'll have a great time!

What about accommodation?

Where you sleep NZAt all of Stray's overnight stops along the route, you'll have a dorm bed reserved at our preferred accommodation. Simply confirm with your Driver Guide each day and pay on arrival. Its that easy.

If you choose to hop-off and stay a few nights, it is your responsibility to book those extra nights in.  If you'd like a private room, ask your Driver, but note, these are subject to availability on the day.

What activities can I do?

Activities NZThere are over 150+ activities on offer! Whether you are a hiker, a biker, a Lord of the Rings fan or an adrenaline junkie you can start getting inspired by checking out our comprehensive Destination Guides.

Once you're on the bus, your Driver will recommend activities, let you know what they cost, even help you plan your budget so you can do as much as possible!
