Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I get a visa? Can I get one upon arrival?

Visa requirements vary depending on where you’re coming from and where you going, we recommend that you contact the appropriate embassy in your country of origin. For a general overview, you can find information about visas for Asia here.

Why do I need to provide my passport, travel insurance and next of kin information?

The short answer is: to comply with Stray's Health and Safety policy. The long answer involves complying with our Health and Safety policy, Thailand's requirements around insurance should any medical emergency occur and the Laos government's legislation relating to travelling on our buses within Laos and crossing borders in Laos. If you require any further information please contact reservations@straytravel.com.

What will I eat whilst in South East Asia?

Western food is sparse outside the main centres so come open-minded about eating local food. At our stops we will recommend tasty restaurants but when you get into local villages and homestays be prepared to eat simple local fare, with maybe the odd wild-card ingredient (which is part of the fun!). Supermarkets are not the norm but we will point out places where you can stock up on food for the day. Depending what you eat, you can spend US$10 - 35 a day on food.

Please note vegetarian meal options may at times be limited for choice but there is always rice, noodles and soups, and excellent fruit and vegetables are plentiful at the local markets.

What is an NZeTA, and do I need one before I fly?

Most of our international visitors need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before arriving. But don’t stress you can apply easily via the official app or website.

How much should I budget for?

We suggest you bring US$35 each day for food and entertainment.

What is the best time of year to travel in South East Asia?

November through February are the cooler months and therefore the peak tourist season. Some people prefer to come during the green season, July through October.  More rain (usually in the afternoon and evening) but less tourists and a patchwork of verdant green scenery.

Welcome to Vietnam! Depending on your arrival time, you may have a chance to begin exploring Hanoi - a lively capital known for its ancient temples, colonial architecture, and fascinating cultural blend. Wander through the maze-like streets of the Old Quarter, or unwind by the peaceful Hoan Kiem Lake. In the evening, meet your Tour Leader and fellow travellers before setting out on an orientation walk to discover some of the city's key highlights.

Accommodation: Hong Ngoc Cochinchine Hotel

Today you’ll have time to explore Hanoi, Vietnam’s energetic capital where the buzz of thousands of motorcycles turns even crossing the street into a memorable adventure. Discover some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the solemn Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the nation’s beloved leader rests. Nearby, visit the peaceful Ho Chi Minh's Stilt House, offering insight into his simple lifestyle, and the historic One Pillar Pagoda, a unique Buddhist temple rising gracefully from a single stone pillar. This evening, explore Hanoi’s exceptional culinary scene. Consider dining at Restaurant 69, said to be over 300 years old, or sample the delicious street food found on nearly every corner — where the locals follow the golden rule: “the lower the chair, the cheaper the beer.”

Accommodation: Hong Ngoc Cochinchine Hotel

This is an exciting adventure where you’ll explore the cave’s darkness with the help of a head torch, discover ancient fossils and slide down muddy ridges, all while Asian bats fly overhead. Afterwards, back at the mouth of the cave you can wash off all the mud by spending the afternoon swimming and playing in the river.

Take time today to explore this charming town’s many offerings. When the sun goes down is when Hoi An really turns on its charm. Apparently, the recipe is a family secret, held by only one family who supply all the restaurants around town.

Hoi An is full of so many options to experience and enjoy. Don’t be surprised when the locals wave and greet you with welcoming smiles.

Want To Know More About Vietnam

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

Vietnam's weather changes from region to region, so the best time to visit depends on where you're travelling within the country, and which activities you're hoping to do.

The best time to visit North Vietnam - Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long Bay:

The cool and dry season (November to April) is the most popular time to visit northern Vietnam when pleasant temperatures and little rain make travelling easy. It's ideal for trekking in Sapa and exploring Ha Long Bay.

The best time to visit Central Vietnam - Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang:

The dry season (February to August) is the best time to visit central Vietnam when the skies are clear and sunny. It can be very hot, especially in July and August, so make sure you're prepared for some hot days!

The best time to visit South Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc Island:

The dry season (November to April) is the best time to visit southern Vietnam when the weather is warm and it doesn't rain much. Perfect for cruising on the Mekong River!

Is Vietnam friendly to tourists?

Vietnam welcomes tourists with open arms! The Vietnamese are known for their warm smiles and helpful nature, making you feel comfortable despite potential language barriers. The country boasts a low crime rate and caters well to travellers with English signage and tours readily available.

Just be mindful of occasional petty scams in tourist areas and be prepared to bargain at markets, a common practice in Vietnam (don't worry, our local guides will show you the ropes!).

Is travelling in Vietnam cheap or expensive?

Vietnam is generally considered a budget-friendly travel destination, especially compared to Western countries. When it comes to accommodation, transport and activities, Stray Tours makes sure you're getting great bang for your buck, and your local guide will make sure you're getting the best price for any extra activities you book.
