Today we’re leaving the busy city and taking a ferry to the idyllic island of Koh Rong, known for its sandy coves, coral reefs and great nightlife. The dense jungle terrain is dotted with coconut palms and waterfalls. In the south are Jewel orchids, a small zoo home to butterflies, snakes, and birds, and lively Police Beach, a party spot. Want To Know More About Cambodia?

Why Visit Cambodia?

Cambodia is a country rich in culture and variety, which stuns visitors with its ancient wonders. Stray travellers love exploring the majestic Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument, and discovering hidden temples shrouded in mystery. It's a place where the modern world can feel so far away, where the opulent palaces of Phnom Penh contrast with the sombre reminders of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and where authentic experiences wait for travellers who look for them.

From wild national parks to fresh Cambodian cuisine and vibrant markets, there's really something for everyone.

What Should I Wear To Angkor Wat and Cambodia Temples?

Cambodian temples are revered spaces, so please pay respect through your attire and behaviour. Your tour guide can advise on appropriate clothing, but generally, long skirts or pants are recommended for women (don't worry, most temples offer wraps if needed).

Remember to remove your shoes before entering as a sign of respect. Be mindful of your body language too - avoid touching heads, which are considered sacred in Cambodian culture. Feet are seen as the lowest part of the body, so refrain from pointing or gesturing with them. While minor slips may be overlooked in tourist areas, understanding these simple tips goes a long way in showing respect and making sure you enjoy a smooth visit to Cambodia's beautiful temples.

When is The Best Time to Visit Cambodia?

Cambodia has a wet season and a dry season. We take the guesswork out of your trip by scheduling our Cambodia tours in the Dry Season, from November to May. The dry season gives us clear sunny days and pleasant temperatures perfect for exploring temples and enjoying the outdoor activities of our small group tours.

What is traditional food in Cambodia?

Cambodian cuisine is a bold tapestry of flavours, influenced by its neighbours and unique ingredients.

Popular Cambodian dishes include:

  • Fish Amok: This delicately steamed fish in a creamy coconut, lemongrass and ginger curry sauce is wrapped in banana leaves. If you're not a fan of fish, look for amok with chicken, tofu or veggies.

  • Samlor: A hearty soup with various broths, vegetables, and meat (fish, pork, chicken). SamlorKorkor, with lemongrass and turmeric, is a national favourite.

  • Tropical fruit: The fresh fruit in Cambodia is out of this world! Jackfruit, pineapples, watermelon, mangoes, bananas and dragon fruit grow here, and you can often find a street vendor mixing up fresh juices or smoothies for a refreshing treat.

  • Nom Banh Chok: Breakfast in Cambodia is a far cry from soggy cornflakes or toast. Nom Banh Chok is a popular breakfast dish made from fragrant fish-based curry soup topped with fresh herbs, vegetables, and thin rice noodles.

  • Khmer Curry: You'll find red, green, and yellow curries with a variety of ingredients. Cambodian cooking is just as tasty as Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese food, but usually isn't as spicy, so you'll find a range of spice levels to choose from.

  • Cambodian Desserts: Dig into sticky rice with juicy mango and coconut milk, or treat yourself to sweet French influenced pastries.

We recommend getting out of your comfort zone and trying new foods while travelling in Cambodia, there'sa whole world of flavours to explore!

Is it Safe to Travel to Cambodia?

Cambodia is generally considered safe for tourists, and Cambodians are known for their warm personalities and willingness to help visitors (even with a language barrier). They appreciate tourism and the economic benefits it brings to their beautiful country.

The crime rate is low, but petty theft and scams can happen in tourist areas, so keep an eye on your belongings. In some regional areas, there might be advisories to stick to well-maintained paths for safety reasons, and Wet Season can bring severe weather.

Stray's tour guides are locals - they know the country, the culture, and the people, and are there to show you the ropes and keep you safe on your Cambodian adventure!

How many days in Cambodia is enough?

One week in Cambodia is enough for a whirlwind tour, but 9 days gives you time to really experience the atmosphere, culture and sights, without being constantly on the move. You want at least a few days to explore the main cities and Angkor Wat, and a few to relax on the gorgeous beaches in the south.

How Long Should I Spend at Angkor Wat?

Depending on how much you want to see, allow at least one day of your Cambodia itinerary to explore the ancient wonders of Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is part of the largest religious structure in the world, a vast complex containing other significant temples like Bayon and Ta Prohm. To give you an idea of the scale, it takes 45 minutes to walk from the entrance of Angkor Wat to the Bayon Temple.

Our Cambodian group tours allow a full day in Angkor Wat, so you can explore the outer buildings, appreciate the hidden details, and climb the central towers for breathtaking panoramic views. You can also hire bicycles, jeeps and tuk-tuks to help you see more of the site. We recommend getting up early one day (we know you're on holiday, but we promise it's worth it) to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, it's truly spectacular.
