Stray No Longer Runs Hop-On/Hop-Off: Meet Our Fixed-Date Tours

For a lot of travellers, hop-on/hop-off bus travel was the classic way to explore New Zealand. Stray no longer runs hop-on/hop-off passes. Instead, we run fixed-date small group tours with accommodation included, so all you need to do is turn up and enjoy the trip.

Why we changed

We've been taking people on adventures since 2002. We're a bunch of travellers who like to travel a little differently. We love ticking off the big bucket list experiences, but our real mission is to go further off the beaten track. There's always more to discover if you just Stray a little further off the highway.

The most asked questions on the old hop-on/hop-off network were "where should I hop off and how long should I stay?" and "if I hop off in XYZ, is it guaranteed I can hop on again in X days?" For most travellers, it's their first trip to New Zealand, and nobody wants to spend it worrying about accommodation and how to get to the next stop.

So we moved to fixed-length tours with accommodation included. You know where you're staying, you know when you're leaving, and as soon as the bus stops, you've arrived somewhere amazing.

What's included on a Stray tour

Accommodation

Accommodation is included on every tour.

For Select tours, you’ll enjoy 3-4 star hotels, plus high country farms and scenic lodges near the waterfront or national parks. Hotel rooms are ensuite, with shared facilities at some Strademark places and solo occupancy upgrades available.

For Adventure tours, you’ll stay in quality shared accommodation to keep the costs down and the social energy high. You can expect more days, more stops, and more of the places that never make it into the guidebooks.

Private coach transport

Kick back, soak up the scenery and let someone else do the driving. You'll travel by private, air-conditioned bus.

Your Stray Guide

Expect entertaining anecdotes, great recommendations and local insider knowledge from a charismatic guide who knows every inch of the country. You can't get that from a Google search. Many of our passengers highlight their guide as the best part of the whole trip!

Your Travel Mates

With a maximum of 24 passengers plus a driver/guide per bus, this is the perfect size to enjoy your trip alongside new friends who become like family.

Meals

Breakfast is included most days, with a few extra meals along the journey. Check your itinerary for exactly what’s included.

Activities

Your tour includes many activities, with optional activities bookable in our Seymour app.

Adventure activities are high energy, high reward, nothing held back. Think glacier hikes. Canyon swings and glowworm caves.
Select activities are iconic, immersive and elevated. Think Māori cultural immersion. Remote eco safaris and Fiordland cruises.
