If you've got a spare afternoon and really want to stretch your legs, the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is a beautiful walk round the headland.  You might spot seals, seabirds and even dolphins.

The walk starts at Point Kean Car Park where you'll often see a local seal colony basking in the sun. There's also a little shop selling fresh seafood to fuel you for your walk!

Head up the hill to a lookout platform and the first information panel (there are several along the route). Follow the track along the cliff to Whalers Bay viewpoint, where you can take the track down to the shoreline if you wish.

Look out for the Hutton's Shearwater colony (an endangered bird endemic to Kaikoura) behind a predator proof fence. Follow the track to South Bay and then the markers back to town via Scarborough Street to return to the Esplanade.
