New Zealand Bus Tour for Independent Travelers

ORANGE IS THE NEW GREEN

We believe the majority of visitors to New Zealand choose us as a location for our pristine scenery and outdoors. Stray wants you to have a fantastic time experiencing our beautiful country but we also know that all of us need to play our part in caring and maintaining it.

Our aspiration is to fully get involved in helping to protect this unique environment for which NZ is renowned for (and for all generations of travellers that might come after you). In order to achieve this major goal and because we aim to become a truly sustainable company we have undertaken the following initiatives:

+ We have a clean up inititiative called 'Polish My Pipi' where on the first day of every month groups help clean up the area they are staying at.

+ We have the first commercially-run bus in NZ operating on recycled waste product (used cooking oil) for the Stray’s Auckland city orientation tour

+ We run different size and more economical buses depending on group size to minimise impact

+ We run the newest fleet of backpacker vehicles with Euro 3 and 4 emission standards

+ We encourage our drivers to enforce the ‘take only photos, leave only footprints’ policy

+ We started a campaign to support the Native Bird Recovery Centre in Whangarei

+ We commissioned experts as consultants to audit and help ensure us to reduce our emissions and be as environmentally friendly as possible

+ We are helping YHA build a 54 bed hostel and learning centre on Stewart Island by donating a percentage of YHA's Stray sales to the project.  For more info on this initiative see Stewart Island Project

+ We recycle plastic, glass and paper in the Stray offices and use energy efficient light bulbs

Stray bus groups staying at our accommodation The Barn in Abel Tasman get to plant a tree for free while staying there.  You get to help the environment and get to leave a momento to your trip!

+ We provide scooters instead of cars for our sales staff vehicles to have less emissions

+ We run fewer departures in the winter when there are less travellers to New Zealand, as while travelling on a bus is one of the most energy efficient ways to travel this is only true if the bus is full!

Because of our efforts we were pleased to be awarded Qualmark (NZ tourism's official mark of quality) Enviro Green Silver Award.  We were the first backpacker bus company in our market to have been awarded an Enviro Green Award.

Please help us keep New Zealand clean and green too!

Thanks,

Stray Team

Want to do your bit?

One thing you can do while you're in New Zealand is volunteer to help out the Department of Conservation. They all need helpers and it's usually a fun and rewarding experience! For more info visit the DOC Volunteer Programme

I did the Short Moe pass in November/07 and it was a wicked trip. Would like to thank my driver Ricky for doing a great job - sweet as man.
Would highly recommend Stray, especially for solo travellers. Lots of variety of ages and nationalities on the bus which was great. Just wish I has more time to spend but i am sure to be back.
Cheers, Stray.
