Mt Cook
At 3764 metres it is the highest of the 27 mountains in New Zealand that are over 3000 metres. If it is clear you should be able to see it today. The area, which was designated a National Park in 1953 includes 19 peaks over 3000m and glaciers cover 40 percent of the park. By way of comparison (and because we like to beat the Australians) it is more than 1500 metres higher than Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciusko. It was named after Captain James Cook.
