Milford Sound DEALS

Milford sound is actually a fiord. This is an absolutely stunning place, which you really must visit. Its most well known feature is probably Mitre Peak the world’s highest sea cliff at 1692m. It was given the name of Mitre Peak by early explorers because it resembled the Mitre on a Bishop’s hat. It is 290m deep in the middle but only 120m at the sea entrance. This is because this was the terminal point of the glacier, which created it. The fiords in this area contain unusual life because they have a 2-4 metre layer of fresh water which sits above the salt water (because it is so calm) and only weak light filters through to below. This means that there is a great deal of sea life which would usually only be found in very deep water relatively near the surface. You will also see an abundance of wildlife at and above the surface including, fur seals, crested penguins, bottle nosed and dusky dolphins. Initial development in this area is largely down to a guy called Donald Sutherland (not the actor apparently) who was an old sea dog who settled here in the late 1800s and became known as the hermit of Milford. He discovered the huge waterfalls, which he named after himself. He claimed that the Sutherland falls were over 1,000 metres high and the highest in the world. This was a great trick as it attracted tourists and he was able to build the first hotel in the Sound and went from living like a hermit to being the host of people from around the world. The falls while high and spectacular are actually 630 metres and are not the highest in the world.

Virtual Tour

In July 2007 we booked on the stray bus from Auckland, on the Short Moe pass.
I have always worked in customer service related industries, and have never personally felt the need to write a letter of appreciation or of complaint before in my life.
We had numerous bus drivers on the route, But James who drives on the north Island most certainly stood out from the rest! He really made the whole group's trip with great knowledge of New Zealand, good sense of humour and an infectious personality. He is a great attribute to your company.
I have just got back home from travelling around the world, along the way I have recommended The Stray bus to many travellers stopping off in NZ.
The world is so big and there are so many countries to see and things to do, so it is very rare I would ever go back to the same country or to re-do an activity, But New Zealand and the stray bus are definitely and exception to this. I cant wait to do it all over again. Keep up the good work and all the best for 2008
