TOUR NZ ONBOARD A STRAY BACKPACKER BUS

Flexible NZ Travel For Backpackers

PURE FREEDOM

Basically you can get on and off the bus wherever you want and stay as long as you want; then just jump on the next bus as it comes back through (view the entire Stray route). Alternatively you can use our trips as a New Zealand tour – we fit in lots of activities along the way so if you’re short on time and can only fit in the minimum days of a trip you’ll still have the chance to experience local culture, unique activities and real action.

WE DELIVER BY:

Including more in our main routes
The back roads, the beaches, the wilderness areas, the unusual activities – as well as the better known attractions.

Staying closer to the action
Not just in hostels and hotels in big towns, but also lodges, pubs and cabins as near as possible to the action (activities, beaches, culture, national parks).

Stopping to do things along the way
We make time during the travel days for snorkeling at Goat Island, the Tongariro Crossing, sailing in the Abel Tasman…(many activities are free and there are always different options).

Bus
We use mini coaches (new purpose built 45 seaters, 29 and 14 seaters – depending on the route) mainly for better access to off the beaten track places but also as smaller group sizes give us more options for accommodation and generally work better.

Offering unique stops and activities
Down to earth Maori culture, free mud pools, a bush sauna, caving and kayaking with locals in out of the way places… interesting real local things which are great value.

Attracting the best people
Travellers not tourists : Independent people of a wide range of nationalities and ages who want to get involved in the place they are travelling. To put it simply, Stray travellers are up for it and it is because they are, that we are able to do so much.

Driver / Guides : We attract locals who want to show off the real New Zealand to be driver / guides. They come from varied backgrounds and get the industry’s best training. As well as being your local on hand they provide commentary, book beds and activities and generally provide guidance on things as varied as culture and local drinking spots. These are all people that you’d want to share your experience with.

Understanding
We are independent and totally focused on providing the best trips. The people who run Stray are the ones who are out and about sussing and maintaining the things that we offer. We listen to travellers (we survey every customer) and tune what we do to suit their needs. We don’t settle for ‘good enough’ and continually push the edge in seeking out alternative attractions. It’s an ongoing process and it leads to great new things like bone carving in Barrytown, our sheep farm stay and our amazing new stop in Hicks Bay on the East Cape. We have huge experience (my mates and I set up what is credited with being the first ‘hop on hop off’ backpacker bus network’), and we know better than anyone, that being the best comes from staying close to the market (no corporate can do this) and working with great crew and local operators to provide what you want. Stray gives you more of real New Zealand than any other travel option and you’ll love it.

Don’t just take our word for it – ask a traveller or check out the comments on this website (which is tellingly the only live customer comments bulletin board in our market).

Cheers, Neil Geddes

HOMEPAGE > HOW IT WORKS

Things to Know

+ Our passes are just a guide. You can create your own, starting and finishing anywhere on our circuit.

+ You can get on and off anywhere over the routes (as often as you want).

+ All passes are valid for 12 months.

+ We reserve beds in our night stopovers. There is always an option at backpacker hostel rates available (about $25 per night), and twin and double options to hotel standards from about $65 per couple. With standard passes you simply pay for your accommodation as you go (‘Stray Beds’ passes include accommodation, ask your travel agent for more information on this).

+ You can self cater (we make supermarket stops) but there are cheap meals available at all stops.

+ In summer we have daily departures throughout our main network (excludes departures on the East Cape and south from Queenstown).

+ We pick up and drop off from all preferred accommodation. Where possible with prior organization, we will pick you up from anywhere else as well.

+ You can hire bedding for the dorm rooms or get a made-up room in every overnight stop.

+ Our buses are set up with good stereos and lots of luggage space – we have room for your guitar, bike or surfboard (Malibus may have to be cut in half).

+ Our trips are active. If walks and wildlife aren’t your thing – don’t travel with us. If they are, bring some good walking shoes and a day pack. Don’t worry about not being fit enough, we cater to all fitness levels and all activities are optional.

CHOOSING A PASS

When looking at what pass is best for you – you should firstly consider your arrival and departure points in and out of NZ, the time you have to spend and the things that you ‘can’t miss’.

Where Stray is New Zealand’s leading backpacker bus network, some like to go it alone and drive themselves; we also offer Spaceships – like a good car to drive but with more useful features than a campervan.
