NZ Local Culture

Just by cruising on the Stray bus and listening to your guide you’ll pick up loads of information about the New Zealand culture. When you’re off the bus you’ll get to meet local characters and iwi, and have the chance to emmerse yourself in the culture through various activities.

Cultural Stay.
We worked with the local Maori who built a Marae for Stray passengers to uniquely have the chance to stay overnight on. You get to learn about local culture and traditions and get an interactive show (learn the haka) with children from a local Maori language only school.

East Cape Trip.
We work closely with locals (we provide the vehicles while they own and operate the trip) so you can get fully involved in the culture of this special place. There are many activity options such as bone carving, weaving, fishing, shark diving, a Maori bush medicine tour, a marae, or horse riding.

West Coast Cultural Day.
We offer a day of unique local activities including, bone carving, walking and kayaking in Paparoa National Park, a spit roast and a stay in an old gold miners pub (just meeting the locals is a unique cultural experience!)

Abel Tasman
In Abel Tasman there is a great waka trip you can do to for a unique indigenous Maori experience. This is especially good for those only travelling in the South Island.

Sheep Shearing in Tuatapere
Most people think of sheep when they think of New Zealand so no trip would be complete without a farm tour and the opportunity to shear a sheep (shear not share – Kiwis don’t like to share their sheep). See the sheep being expertly herded around the farm and then pick the woolliest you can find and shear it yourself!
