Arts and Crafts

Travelling on the Stray bus is not all about jumping out of planes and hiking through the bush, it’s also about ‘art and culture’! There are some great opportunities for you to see local arts and crafts as well participate in some yourself!

Museums
We encourage all our passengers to spend the afternoon in Te Papa our national museum while in Wellington. Te Papa always has great art and history exhibitions that are free to view as well as temporary exhibitions that are only a small fee. Another great museum is the Auckland War Memorial Museum located about 10 mins from the centre of town. There’s a $5 donation to enter but from there you can learn about our history and involvement in all the major wars including the Maori land wars. It also has the greatest collection of Maori Taonga (treasures) in the world for you to view.

East Cape Trip
On our East Cape you have the option to participate in a number of local Maori crafts including bone carving, weaving and a Maori bush medicine tour. We visit the church at a town called Tikitiki which contains some of the most intricate Maori carvings you’ll ever see.

Barrytown
Hang with two local characters in this West Coast historical mining town and carve your own bone carving to keep as a souvenir.

The Shearing Shed, Waitomo
New Zealand’s only angora rabbit shearing show – watch them shear a rabbit (we know it’s random) and then have a look at all the things they make out of the wool.
